With 2022 Soccer Registration currently underway, we'd like to bring you updated information about a change to our Scholarship Fund that is in place for Burlington Edison Youth Soccer.
At the April 14, 2022 City of Burlington Council Meeting, it was unanimously approved to rename the B-E Youth Soccer Scholarship to the Nick Nickelson Youth Soccer Scholarship on behalf of Burlington Dad and B-EYS Coach Nick Nickelson who passed away abruptly in a car accident at the end of the Fall 2021 Soccer Season. Longtime friend, fellow coach and former Burlington-Edison Youth Soccer Club (B-EYSC) President, Jeremy Sitton had this to say in his letter of support to the Burlington City Council;
“… Nick started coaching with me in 2010 for the B-EYSC… in the 11 years that he assisted and head coached, he touched many players and won many championships for B-EYSC. Nick also took the time to take his rec players to select tournaments and recreation cups, placing in those as well. He had countless hours donated lining the fields, fixing nets, and running free coaches lines… he was also the equipment coordinator for many years [for BEYSC]. Any events that his players would invite him to, he would attend. Whether it be a choir concert or a football game he would be in the stands if invited… I hope you consider changing the scholarship name in his honor and [for] what he had done for our community.”
Nick left behind two boys, and they wanted to donate the last of his Memorial Fund ($1000) to something that was very near and dear to their father's heart, the B-E Youth Soccer Program. They felt that by donating those funds directly to the Youth Soccer Scholarship Fund in Nick's name, they will help sustain the opportunity for other players to have the chance to play as [they and] Nick did.
The City of Burlington is very grateful for this gesture and is honored to keep the memory of a great community volunteer, leader, friend and dad alive through the renaming of the Youth Soccer Scholarship fund to the Nick Nickelson Youth Soccer Scholarship. If you would like to donate to the fund, proceed to our online catalog and select your donation amount. All funds go directly toward player registration fees to play in the B-E Youth Soccer program through the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department.
Sincerely,
Christi Kinney, Recreation Coordinator
