Get a Library Card
Burlington Public Library is a department of the city government and therefore is supported by city taxes. Residents inside the city limits may apply for a card free of charge.
Identification is required and an annual sticker is placed on qualifying borrowers cards to demonstrate eligibility for reciprocal cards. Visit your current resident library for a sticker before you go to one of the reciprocal libraries to avoid complications.
To apply for a card, please bring in 2 forms of identification:
- something with your picture on it: e.g. driver's license, passport, government identification
- something with your local address on it: e.g. driver's license, rental agreement, utility bill
Children of all ages may have a library card. A parent or guardian will be asked to sign the application for children under age 13, accepting the responsibility for all fines or charges incurred.
Burlington-Edison School District employees who do not reside within Burlington city limits may receive a library card at no charge.
In addition, staff of local private schools, child care centers, and other educational facilities located in Burlington may also obtain a teacher card. Persons serving in substitute or temporary positions do not qualify for a teacher/staff card.
Cards for Property and Business Owners
People who own a business and/or property within Burlington city limits but who do not reside here may receive a library card at no charge. Please bring in a property tax statement, sale agreement, business license or other document that shows your name and legal ownership of the business or property, in addition to current photo identification. Please be aware that these cards are for the actual property or business owner only, not employees of a Burlington business.
STAR Reader Cards
Children from birth to 17 years who do not qualify for a free Burlington Public Library card may still check out books (up to 4 items at a time) from our STAR Reader collection by completing a brief application. The collection consists of children's books (from board books for babies to chapter books for older readers) which have been donated to the library. The Burlington Public Library wants to make sure ALL children develop a lifelong love of reading, regardless of whether or not they live within city limits. Donations to the STAR Reader program are gratefully accepted.
Lose your card? Replacement cards cost $1 each. Please let us know as soon as you realize your card is missing; we'll make sure no one else can use your card to check things out.
