Noon Tour of Historic Carnegie Building
1:00 PM Time Capsule Opening and Program
820 E Washington Ave
Burlington, WA 98233
Carnegie libraries were being built across America in the early part of the 20th century from funds donated by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. As is the case with ours, it was common for these libraries to have a special cornerstone and we believe our library also houses a time capsule!
Burlington's Historic Carnegie Library Centennial Celebration
Saturday, June 25, 2016
Saturday June 25th is Burlington's Historic Carnegie Library Centennial Celebration from noon to 3:00 pm. Festivities begin with a tour inside the historic Carnegie Library building by Edie Edmundson, from noon to 12:45pm. The Carnegie Library is located in historic downtown Burlington at 901 E. Fairhaven Ave.
Immediately following the tour, the festivities move to the Burlington Public Library, one block south of Fairhaven, at 820 Washington Ave.
According to correspondence and newspaper accounts, 100 years ago, our town officials placed a time capsule with a number of items/documents inside of it into the cornerstone. The time capsule was installed in June 1916 behind the cornerstone of the Carnegie Library at the start of its construction. The contents of the time capsule and related historical artifacts will be displayed for public viewing at the library during the celebration.
Please join us to celebrate 100 years of history this building symbolizes.
